Realtor Bill Martin is new planner
Stanardsville resident Bill Martin has been appointed to the Greene County Planning Commission, following the resignation in August of Phyllis Woodfolk of Ruckersville.
After at least three years of service on the commission, Woodfolk decided to depart for "personal reasons," including a demanding family schedule.
Woodfolk is also a longstanding board member for Skyline Cap, Inc, Community Action Agency.
Woodfolk said she is grateful for her time on the commission.
"It was a great opportunity for me to learn about the planning needs in Greene County and to help make decisions concerning development," said Woodfolk. "Being able to express what the citizens feel, along with meeting the needs of the county, is important.
Woodfolk says people would be surprised how much training is required to serve on the commission -- and how much time goes into decision-making.
"You need to have good common sense, you have to be open-minded and you have to be able to vote your own conscience -- that was easy for me."
Filling the vacancy is local realtor Bill Martin, who was appointed by the Board of Supervisors in September.
Board of Supervisors member Jeri Allen said Woodfolk's commitment to the commission is appreciated. She is the Board's liaison to the commission.
"She made a tremendous contribution," Allen remarked. "But I understand it's a very time-consuming assignment."
Allen added: "We welcome Bill Martin and look forward to his participation in dealing with land use issues in Greene County."
Martin, a retired Senior Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Agency for International Development, currently works as a realtor with Charlottesville Country Properties. He is married to Dumisile Nxumalo Martin and has one son, Bryan Martin, who is a senior at The College of William & Mary.
Asked about what he expects to bring to the five-member commission, Martin said: "The quality of life for citizens anywhere in the world depends upon the their ability to carefully plan for the future. I look forward to serving the citizens of Greene County and aiding the Board of Supervisors to make smart decisions that will enhance the quality of life for all of Greene County's residents."
