On Wednesday, Apr. 29, Tiya Rolle, a tennis pro competing in the Boyd Tinsley Tennis Tournament, spoke with third through fifth graders at Ruckersville Elementary. She was accompanied by Lynda Harrell, a representative from the Charlottesville Area Tennis Association (CATA).
Rolle, whose home is in Miami, Florida, has been travelling on the professional tennis circuit for many years. She and Harrell answered questions from enthusiastic students, and then put on a demonstration of short court tennis, a component of the QuickStart tennis program of the United States Tennis Association. Short -court tennis uses smaller and lighter racquets, low bounce balls, and a smaller court. The skills learned through the QuickStart tennis program are aimed at allowing young children to achieve immediate success in tennis.
Ruckersville Elementary was the first school in the area to receive equipment as part of a grant written by the CATA, and funded by Luck Stone Corporation. The equipment received included tennis racquets, low and medium bounce balls, and two portable tennis nets. With the equipment, the children at RES have been working on both basic racquet skills at the early elementary level, and on more advanced short court skills in the upper elementary.
Many thanks go out to Tiya for taking the time to visit, to Lynda Harrell and CATA for their continued support, and especially to local sponsor, Luck Stone Corporation for their very generous donation of funds for tennis equipment for the children.
