Sam Wilchek of Ruckersville discovers a tortoise while visiting the Greene County Library Summer Reading kick-off.
The pirate ship anchored outside Greene County’s Library last week was proof the 2009 Summer Reading Program was about to set sail. This inflatable vessel though was filled with hot air not pirates so kids lined up to walk the plank onto the deck for a bouncing good time.
About 200 people cooled down with free ice cream (sprinkles and sauce included) while they checked out the schedule of summer offerings. The reigning Miss Greene issued her royal decree inviting young residents to join her on Mondays for special reading sessions through July.
Visitors took a walk to talk to the animals in a special petting zoo. A very literary donkey named Mr. D’Arcy politely accepted carrot treats from delighted children with hand-painted faces while a few steps away a young goat kidded around with other visitors.
In a small pen, a bunny was not quick but quietly laid on the cool ground while a determined tortoise walked around and over him. Kids and adults who were fond of squirmy, squishy things could pick through a tub of fresh dirt to see – and hold – the worms writhing there.
Mostly, the crowd took the time to discover all the possibilities of summer to be found when exploring e books and marking their schedules for weeks of fun.
