June 11
In recognition of Flag Day, American Legion Post 128 and Greene County Boy Scout Troup 74 will hold a ceremony at the Ruckersville Fire House at 6pm, to dispose of worn flags. Old flags may be turned into any member of Post 128 or to the Ruckersville Fire House for disposal. The public is invited to observe the ceremony.

JABA Senior Center will be having a "Good for You" cooking class. Learn about the wonderful world of grains & their nutritional value! Menu includes: Quinoa Pilaf w/ sun dried tomatoes, pine nuts, onions, peas, herbs, millet cakes, cheesy brown rice casserole w/ spinach and mushrooms. The Habitat Store's first Women With Nails, a day of fun for women, by women, encouraged many attendees to learn more! The next one will be Thursday evening, June 11, 6:30-8pm, and will include practical, "do it yourself" demonstrations on 'How to Compost and Lawn Mower Maintenance'. All workshops are instructed by local women. And our goal is to educate more women, both homeowners and renters, about their own home maintenance. But guys are welcome too! Women With Nails is totally free and open to the public. No need to RSVP or register. Come for 1 or both topics. At the Habitat Store,1221 Harris Street, near downtown Charlottesville. Fire, a local women's a cappella chamber ensemble, will perform a benefit concert for PACEM on Sunday, June 14th, at 3:00 pm at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1901 Thomson Rd., Ch'Ville. The performance is free and open to the public. Financial donations are encouraged in support of PACEM's interfaith initiative to engage people and congregations in providing shelter, meals and access to support services for local homeless residents. Greene’s Farmer Market, sponsored by the County Ruritans, will be offering fresh produce for sale beginning June 20, 8am-11am. Runs every Saturday during the summer. Farmers and gardeners are urged to bring their produce to the Greene County Technical Education Center parking lot, off U.S. Route 33 west, where they can set up shop at no charge. Stanardsville's Fourth of July Parade is just around the corner. Interested in participating or volunteering? We meet each Thursday night at 7pm at the Town Hall. This year's parade will include post-parade festivities, including a fabulous bazaar. Join the Old Rag Master Naturalists, a chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program (VMN). The chapter is now accepting applications for the 2009 class, set to start Aug. 13. The goal is to produce crops of citizen volunteers to help further understand out natural environment. The training will be help at the Extension office in Madison County on Thursday s, 9am-12:30pm. and will be delivered in 12 classroom sessions and 4 field trips by professionals in the various fields. Fall Softball League: Greene County's Ministerial Association will again offer its GCMA Church Fall Youth and Adult Coed Softball League. The season will begin September 13. Games will be on Sundays starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Youth Center in Ruckersville. To field a team, there must be 5 women and 5 men, ages 16 and older. Nora Gillespie, Director of the Central Virginia Small Business Development Center, will be offering free small business counseling at the EDA office the first Wednesday of every month after the Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast. The Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District has a educational opportunity available for a motivated Greene County high school or college student to interested in environmental management and conservation. The internship experience will include field learning opportunities in the areas of stormwater management, hydrology, GIS, GPS and natural resource management. The position is unpaid but includes extensive training opportunities identified in part by the student; travel stipend included. For more information, contact CSWCD at 540-825-8591.

All Greene County Students, 18 years and under, will be permitted to ride Greene County Transit at half price of our regular fare rate from June 10 thru August 24, 2009. Students may schedule rides within the county from 7am-to 9:30pm each day Monday-Friday, and from 9am-3:30pm on Saturdays on $1.25 with door to door service. Please call 985-5205 to schedule transportation to your favorite sports events, library visits, 4-H events, or whatever your summer interest may be. Please call as early as possible that we may promptly meet your transportation needs.

During the month of June, the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of peanut butter, jelly, and crackers. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services at 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33) Stanardsville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations for the food bank can be mailed to the Womans Club of Greene County, PO Box 352, Stanardsville, VA 22973. For more information, contact Nancy at 985-5063. Thanks to Greene County residents for participating in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive held by the Post Office in May.

The Food Pantry of Greene, Stanardsville Baptist Church food program, is grateful to all of you who are helping us feed the hungry in Greene. Applications for the 2009-2010 school year are now being accepted for the Skyline CAP Head Start program in Greene County, open to preschool children three to five years old. Children must have turned at least three years of age by September 30, 2009. Those with special needs are encouraged to apply. Skyline CAP Head Start is a free program for income eligible families.
