The Greene County Library Book Discussion Group meets Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m. to discuss "The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" by Louise Erdich. As a priest nears the end of his life, he is asked to prove or disprove the sainthood of a woman he knows well and struggles to guard his own secret identity in the process.

The Rivanna Conservation Society (RCS) is sponsoring a river and stream bank cleanup Saturday as a part of National Trails Day, hosted by Rivanna Trails Foundation (RTF). Volunteers are needed - what to bring: 1) a pair of protective gloves; 2) a bottle of water (for personal use) and 3) a rake (optional). We provide: 1) onsite snacks; 2) lunch; 3) tee-shirt for first 100 participants; 4) trash sacks and 5) trash pickup. The gathering site is Charlottesville Catholic School, 1205 Pen Park Road, Charlottesville.
June 7-8
The SPCA of Greater Charlottesville will be in Ruckersville at Cattail Creek Antique and Garden June 7-8 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a special pet adoption and gardening seminar event. Cattail Creek, a new garden and antique destination located on Rt. 29 just north of Rt. 33 will donate a free Knockout rose, a premium quality rose to anyone adopting a homeless animal at the event. The event will feature free food and beverages donated by Northside Restaurant. Open discussions and demonstrations of container gardening and natural organic composting will be led by Gary Hunter and Ronald Smith, owners of Cattail Creek and experienced landscapers and gardeners. Cattail Creek and the SPCA urge all attendees to consider pet adoption, however, there is no requirement or pressure to do so; your attention and affection for the animals will be greatly appreciated.

Getting away for summer vacation? Don't forget to stop by this month's Greene County Lions Club Blood Drive. The Lions and Virginia Blood Services will be at Greene County Rescue Squad building Tuesday, June 10 from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Take an hour to donate as your one gift of blood could save as many as three lives. All types of blood are urgently needed. At a time when the need for blood increases, many regular donors are on vacation. If you have donated blood before please continue your commitment to saving lives. If this is your first time, thank you for making this lifesaving choice. We welcome your much-needed donation. The 81st annual Powell Reunion will be held June 15 at South River Picnic Grounds on Skyline Drive. Come early and visit with relatives and friends. The Greene County Farmers Market, sponsored by Greene County Ruritans, will be offering fresh produce for sale starting June 21. Farmers and gardeners are urged to bring their produce to the Greene County Technical Center parking lot, where they can set up at no charge. The 4-H Pet Club is proud to announce its fifth annual "Pet Fashion Revue" will be held Saturday, June 21 from 3 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to dress-up their pets and join us for a lot of fun. We have over 40 different categories for judging as well as "Judges Choice, Peoples Choice and Best in Show;" all entries will win at least one award. More information will be announced closer to the event. This year's show will be held on Celt Road, approximately 2.6 miles on the right just past Columbia Gas Plant. During the month of June the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of peanut butter and jelly. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services at 10009 Spotswood Trail (old Rt. 33) Stanardsville, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Your tax-deductible money donations to the food bank can be mailed to the Woman's Club of Greene County, P.O. Applications for the 2008-2009 school year are now being accepted for the Skyline CAP Head Start program in Greene County, open to preschool children three to five years old. Children must have turned at least three years of age by Sept. 30. Those with special needs are encouraged to apply. Skyline CAP Head Start is a free program for income eligible families.
