Opening day at Greene County Youth Center held April 4th

Greene County Youth Center’s opening day on Saturday April 4 began with a prayer given by GCYC board member Ernie Inzana, followed by the National Anthem. The first pitch was thrown by Marian Durrer in honor of her husband, the late Tommy Durrer.
Tommy Durrer for over 40 years was a fixture at the Youth Center and it started when he was in his youth as a player. Tommy never forgot his roots to the game he loved to play. When he passed away he requested any donations made be given to the Youth Center.
The youth center has established a Tommy Durrer Fund with the donations sent to GCYC. Every year, the organization will select players for the grant that otherwise would not be able to play due to cost. This year two players were selected to to play from the Tommy Durrer Fund.
After the games were started, a bald eagle made a showing over the complex, gliding in a northerly direction. As the cool wind of the early morning blew, everyone on the bleachers on field #3 looked up at the majestic bird in pure awe, as the white plume on the head of the eagle glistened in the sun. “It was as if a new beginning and era had started at the Youth Center,” said board president Mike Lamb.
