William Monroe senior Tamesha White came in third in the Group AA State Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held on May 29 in Harrisonburg. White threw a whopping 38 feet 10.75 inches on her last attempt of the day to clinch third place. Before that, White won the shot put for the district, breaking the record in that event.
“I was really excited with the way Tamesha competed at the state meet,” said head track & field coach Shaun Gainer. “Coming into the meet she was projected to get fourth place, which she overcame by getting third and beating the girl who won the regional meet.”
Gainer continued:
“Tamesha didn’t throw her best distances in the preliminary trials, but when you have trials and then finals all you worry about is making it to finals. Once she qualified for finals she threw her best of the day, which propelled her into third place.”
Gainer said he was impressed by the way Tamesha composed herself when she wasn’t throwing her normal distance.
“She was focused on what Coach Rocha emphasized and finally started to relax, which allowed her to throw farther,” said Gainer. “ Tamesha had a remarkable season, one in which we won’t be forgetting soon.”
Two other members of the track and field team earned the right to move on past the regular season. Junior Reanna Shaulis qualified for regionals in the 100-meter hurdles but was unable to compete. Senior Terrence Johnson finished third in the high jump at the district meet and went on to compete at regionals.
Gainer described the overall season for his team as “great.”
“Anytime you can move on past the regular season and have success you aren’t doing too bad,” remarked Gainer. “We were definitely led by seniors, but we have a lot to look forward to in our underclassmen. Some of our athletes have been in this system for two years, so they are learning about our different coaching styles and we are learning how they compete at their best. I look for really good things to come in the future.”
