There was no backing down for the home team on Thursday night, January 29, as William Monroe’s boys basketball team defeated Western Albemarle in a fierce Jefferson District match up. The final score: 56-50.
The game was a physical showdown between the two teams.
And Monroe got it done.
The next night, the Monroe boys came back and delivered another win before a packed house, with an action-packed thriller ending in a sting for the Orange Hornets. The final score: 64-51.
The team’s record advanced to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in the Jefferson District.
“We committed to playing defense the whole night, which kept us in the game, “ said coach Mike Maynard. “We really executed offensively in the fourth quarter. We stretched the lead to 12 midway through the fourth quarter and held them off.“
He added: “I am proud of the guys in giving their heart and soul.“
Top scorers against the Hornets were Andy Brown with 14 points, Mike Roach with 14, Mike Wims with 14, and Desmon Shaver with 13 points.
With the Orange game, Roach reached 341 points for the year and 1, 029 career points.
Maynard praised Monroe’s Terrence Johnson for his performance.
“Johnson really set the tone defensively and came though solidly with rebounds,“ said Maynard. “He’s been like that in the last three games.“
At press time on Tuesday, the Dragons prepared to face Fluvanna on the road. They meet the Hornets on the hardwood again next week.
