Despite a hard fight, Monroe boys fall to Western Albemarle 67-59

Despite a hard-fought game, Western Albemarle’s offensive attack and the team’s success at the free-throw line proved too much in the end for the Dragon boys on Tuesday, February 17.
The Western Albemarle Warriors advanced to the Jefferson District final with a 67-59 victory over William Monroe. the game was played at at Western Albemarle.
The two teams went back and forth until halfway through the fourth quarter, when the Warriors went on a 7-0 run to increase their three-point lead to double digits. Markees Towles was the leading scorer for Monroe. Towles had 16 points while Western was able to limit senior Mike Roach to 13. Mike Wims had 10 points and five blocks.
Dragons coach Mike Maynard expressed pride in his team.
Asked about the overall season in an interview earlier this month, Maynard said that he saw his team “clicking a little better” particularly in the second part of the season.
Plus, he added, “We’re pretty tough to beat in our gym. .. We feed off our crowds. “
But their season is not yet done either; at Record press time on Tuesday, February 24, the Dragon boys were preparing to travel to Western again on Tuesday to face the Warriors in their regional game.
