With a 59-36 win over the Monticello Mustangs, the Greene Dragons completed their miraculous turnaround going from last place to regular-season Jefferson girls basketball champions in just a year.
Monroe has been steady all year, losing just once in the Jefferson - in a barnburner at Charlottesville - but the Dragons returned the favor with a huge win at home two weeks ago, beating the Black Knights to tie the two schools atop the district. They then got a big break when Western knocked off Charlottesville.
With the win, not only did Monroe secure - according to Phillip Lamb - its first district title since the school moved up to Group AA in 2000, but they’ve also wrapped up a berth in the Region II playoffs.
The Lady Dragons’ impressive performance this season is reflected in its recognition from the Jefferson District: Monroe seniors Melanie Lamb and Leah Krynitsky both made 1st team all Jefferson District. And Lamb won the district’s Player of the Year. Coach Phillip Lamb was honored as Coach of the Year.
