Beginning July 1, it became illegal to text message while driving a vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  House Bill (HB) 1876 created the ban that legislators, researchers and safety advocates alike are cheering as a law which they believe will save lives on Virginia roadways. It makes texting while driving a secondary offense.
“Virginia is now among 13 states and the District of Columbia who have taken the lead on this issue, and AAA salutes lawmakers for their aggressive and life saving work,” said Martha Mitchell Meade, spokeswoman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “There is absolutely no doubt that typing a message on a one-by-one inch screen takes a driver’s eyes and mind off of the road and creates a dangerous and deadly scenario.”
