LIBRARY MATTERS 7-02
Published: July 2, 2009
This year, the Fourth of July will be extra special: visitors will once again be allowed to climb up to the crown on the Statue of Liberty, which has been closed since September 11, 2001.
Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has announced that 30 visitors per hour will be guided to the top of the crown-which probably translates into a long wait for tourists and others looking for the stellar view of New York City and New York Harbor that can only be obtained from our most recognizable national monument. Can’t make it up all those steps? Celebrate Lady Liberty with a book from the Greene County Library.
The books below can help introduce your children to this famous American monument.
• Lady Liberty: a biography by Doreen Rappaport
• Naming Liberty by Jane Yolen
In parallel stories, a Ukrainian family prepares to emigrate to the United States in the late 1800s, and Frederic Auguste Bartholdi designs, raises funds for, and builds the Statue of Liberty in honor of the United States’ centennial.
• Building Liberty: a statue is born by Serge Hochain.
Tells the story of the Statue of Liberty from the perspective of four young men, in France or in the United States, who are involved with the statue’s construction and its travels to its new home.
• Etched in stone: enduring words from our nation’s monuments by Ryan Coonerty
