LIBRARY MATTERS 6/18
Published: June 17, 2009
Do you need a break from work? From the current economic downturn? From the oppressive summer heat? Relief is as close as the Greene County Library! Relax, cool off and chill out once a month at the library’s FREE film series.
Films are shown on the fourth Wednesday of the month on the big screen (with surround sound) in the library’s air-conditioned meeting room. During the year you’ll see first run, independent and foreign films from the top festivals. However, this summer the library is offering something different and the slate of movies will be documentaries from the PBS P.O.V. (Point Of View) series.
Our selection for June, “The Boys of Baraka,“ will be presented on June 24 at 7pm. This documentary gives a human face to the alarmingly high drop out rates among black male students in Baltimore, one of the country’s most poverty-stricken cities. The inner-city environment there is toxic, destroying hope and undermining the self-esteem of its youth. The Baraka School project was founded in an attempt to break the cycle of despair these boys experience on a day-to-day basis.
Twenty “at risk” teen-aged black students from Baltimore were transported 10,000 miles to the Baraka School in rural Kenya where there is no television or full-time electricity. “The Boys of Baraka” follows four of the students during their first year away from home. Faced with a strict academic and disciplinary program, these brave children begin the daunting journey towards putting their lives on a fresh path.
Escape with “The Boys of Baraka”—at least for an evening. Enjoy a free, entertaining, educational experience with friends. Sip some free coffee, see the film and join in a discussion afterwards.
