At Nortonsville Church of God, the recipe for the best homemade apple butter includes two top ingredients: fellowship and fun. Each year, members of all ages at the church gather together for two weekends in a row to make hundreds and hundreds of gallons of sweet-smelling, dare-you-not-to-lick-the-spoon apple butter.  People work before sunrise to beyond sunset, quite likely inspired by the scent of hot apples and cinnamon filling the autumn air. This year, the effort produced an estimated 768 gallons of apple butter—that’s more than 3,000 jars!
And “most is already sold,” says church member Nelson Morris.  “It’s one of our largest fundraisers for the church,“ he explains. “Plus it’s a good time to fellowship. It takes a lot of help, but everyone comes together.“
Nelson adds: “We started out 40 years ago with just one kettle, and it’s gradually grown to what it is today.”
