During the month of February, the Greene County Food Bank is requesting donations of canned spaghetti sauce and noodles. Donations can be dropped off at Social Services at 10009 Spotswood Trail in Stanardsville, Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm. Your tax deductible money donations for the food bank can be mailed to the Women’s Club of Greene County, PO Box 352, Stanardsville, VA 22973. For more information contact Nancy at 985-5063

During the months of February and March, the Ruckersville Baptist Church will be having a Free Soup Kitchen each Wednesday 11:00am-1:00pm. It is open to the Community. The Church is located on 33E & Moore Rd/ Follow the signs!!!

Girl Scout cookies have arrived. Girl Scouts will have booths selling cookies this weekend around Greene County. On Friday Troop 939 will be at the Corner Store and Troop 297 will be at the Movie Gallery. Saturday Troop 692 will be at the Food Lion, Troop 3049 will be at Lowe’s and Troop 939 will be at the Dunkin Donuts. On Sunday Troop 433 will be at the Corner Store and Troop 692 will be at Lowe’s. Thank you for supporting you local Girl Scouts. The weekend of the 20th the schedule is: On Friday the 20th, Troop 433 will be at the Movie Gallery. On Saturday Troop 939 will be at Lowe’s and Troop 692 will be at Food Lion.

As a result of the formation of the Tommy Durrer Scholarship Fund, the Greene County Youth Center, Inc. has a limited amount of financial aid available for qualifying families.  Please contact Allison Crawford at 434-806-9557 or Karen Cason at 434-985-8203 by this Friday, February 6th.  We are also accepting contributions for the scholarship fund.


Greene Futbol Club is holding tryouts for the travel soccer teams. Age groups are as follows: Girls U-12/11 turning 11 or 12 by July 31 and Boys U-13/12 turning 12 or 13 by July 31. Jan. 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Greene County Community Park.  If raining the tryouts will be moved the William Monroe Middle School from 6 to 8 p.m.  Snow makeup day is Feb. 7                 For information, call (434)985-4929

Annual meeting of the Greene County Fair Board: Feb. 12th at 7:00pm. At the Ruckersville School Library. Open to the public. Demolition Derby, Aug. 1, Fair Aug. 4-8 2009.

Preschool Storytime. Thursdays, Greene Library Feb. 12-April 30, 10:30am. Ages 2-5. Join us for books, flannel Stories, songs and finger plays. Each week’s storytime concludes with a simple craft that your child can make and take home. Siblings are welcome. No registration required. Storytime will include an Egg Hunt on April 9!

*STAR*, Stanardsville Area Revitalization, is holding a meeting with Main Street property and business owners on Saturday, February 21, at 9:30 a.m., in the Town Hall, to hear their views about new sidewalks and crosswalks, lighting, benches, and other possible enhancements along the Town’s Main Street, and to describe the grants that *STAR* has been awarded to complete this streetscape project. All interested county residents are invited.

Greene Library Book Discussion Group.    7 pm
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston (THE BIG READ) ‘duce a vibrant and achingly human novel. The syncopated beauty of Hurston’s prose, her remarkable gift for comedy, the sheer visceral terror of the book’s climax, all transcend any label that critics have tried to put on this remarkable work.  Discussion led by Hilary Holladay, a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, and the author of three books on African American literature.

March 7
The Madison-Greene Humane Society will be presenting a Rabies Vaccination Clinic on March 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Greene County Tech Center.  Rabies vaccines are $8.00 each and will be administered by Dr. John Hayes, D.V.M.
